Joel Selwood ... Match Review Panel hit star Cats player with level-five striking offence. Source: News Limited
Geelong midfield star Joel Selwood has been offered a three-week suspension by the AFL for striking Hawthorn's Brent Guerra.
Guerra suffered a perforated eardrum in the behind-the-play incident during the last quarter of Saturday night's clash at the MCG which the Cats won by five points.
The AFL's Match Review Panel has assessed the incident as a level-five striking offence, which incurs a four-week ban.
Selwood's penalty of 425 demerit points and a four-match ban would be reduced by 25 per cent to 318.75 points and a three-match ban with an early guilty plea.
The panel relied on a medical report from the Hawks and video evidence in reaching the decision on Selwood, who was listed in Brownlow markets as a $10 chance as equal fourth-favourite.
"Guerra has had issues with his balance and hearing since leaving the field of play," the Hawks said in a statement.
"But has improved significantly over last 24 hours and the club will monitor his progress closely in coming days."
Fox Sports analyst, Paul Roos said he found the grading of the charge to be 'shocking' given the poor quality of the vision, suggesting during an On the Couch segment that someone had to have said something about the hit.
"I'd be interested to know as to what Guerra said,'' Roos said.
"You are grading an incident based on either vision or the umpire saying (something)," the 2005 premiership coach added.
"But in this case maybe it is the (Hawthorn) player.
"The smoking gun's somewhere. You can't grade it on that vision.
"So something must have happened in order for them to grade it like that.''
The Cats play ninth-placed St Kilda, 14th-placed Adelaide and eighth-placed Essendon in the next three rounds.
A premiership player in 2007 and 2009, Selwood is a two-time All-Australian and reigning club champion at Geelong.
