Newcastle closing in on Barnetta

Newcastle are reportedly stepping up in their chase of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta.

Barnetta, one of the Swiss national team's star players was last seen in action scoring two freekicks in Switzerland's 2-2 draw with England at Wembley in an Euro 2012 qualifier.

And according to The Daily Mail, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has seen enough to be convinced that the midfielder would be an excellent addition as the club prepares for their second season back in the Barclays Premier League.

Newcastle finished this past campaign a respectable 12th in the Premier League despite much upheaval at St James Park, with the £35milllion departure of Andy Carroll and the sacking of former manager Chris Hughton causing much unrest within the club.

However, Barnetta is reportedly ready to leave Leverkusen after seven seasons with the German Bundesliga outfit, and could be looking to try his hand in English football.

The paper further suggests that Barnetta could be available for a fee of £6million.

The wide midfielder has played in both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and has clocked up 59 caps for Switzerland.
